Oats are a good source of calories paired with fiber, (thanks to their hull) and have a better protein and amino acid balance than any of the other grains (corn, wheat, barley, etc.) Oats are easily digested and are low in both Non-Structural Carbs (NSC) and sugars.
Because of their low NSC content, they are considered a ‘cool’ source of energy that doesn’t spike your horse’s blood sugar or lead to behavioral mood swings.
There are many places to buy oats, but I only recommend New Country Organics because they are sustainably sourced organics and still competitively priced. The company has a strong moral compass and share many of my same values, and all of their products are Certified Organic, Soy-Free. I offer many of their products and enjoy using them with my own horses and as I help client horses.
