I can honestly say that this program has improved his condition by at least 70% from years past. By changing his diet from a grain based one to whole foods only, without GMO’s, processed or artificial ingredients and adding the Spirulina I feel we have him on a path to success.
TR is my 9 year old, Arab/QH cross who I ride in competitive trail competitions. I have owned him since he was 4 when he came from South Dakota where he had been living on about 300 acres.
Our horses live on our own farm here in Georgia and we keep a close eye on them, as it is necessary for an endurance horse to stay very healthy and fit. We believe they benefit from being outside in pasture for most of the time with free access to forage but as they require a lot of energy for competition, we need to stay on top of their diet and calorie intake.
I started with Karen’s program in April this year because of an ongoing problem with my horse developing Sweet Itch and Canon Keratosis during the warm weather season. Ever since I owned him, I have tried many different supplements such as Chinese herbs, external lotions, oils, ointments made of Sulphur and Zinc Oxide etc., trying to avoid the steroid shots, but nothing had solved the problem so far. In addition to changing the feed to the whole food diet, we added Spirulina, because it helps with the reduction of histamine and boosts their immune system. In fact, when I ran out of Spirulina for about 2 weeks, he started to develop issues again so I know it really makes a difference. You have to keep in mind that treating this condition in a natural way takes time. I am planning on building up his immune system through maintaining this program during the fall and winter to give him the ability to improve even more before the insects arrive next spring.
I use the Fiske oil on his coat and legs where he tends to get the bites. This oil will heal wounds in days and acts as a repellent as well. It also keeps the belly line dermatitis at bay, when I rub a light coat of oil under his belly. I don’t even have to use any fly spray anymore!
While I was out of Spirulina he had a mild recurrence of hives on his face. I poured the oil on a rag and gently rubbed his face with it and he stood perfectly still and almost closed his eyes because it felt so good. He will stand rock solid in the stall with no head restraint for me to treat him with the Fiske.
He simply loves it!
